Travis Burke Experience in Joshua Tree National Park - Travis Burke Photography

Travis Burke Experience in Joshua Tree National Park

This past March, a group of 13 photographers joined me in Joshua Tree National Park for my first ever workshop.

It was a jam-packed 15-hour day. We met at our Hip Camp location–an awesome old west inspired property– and after everyone got acquainted and filled up on breakfast burritos courtesy our friends at HippyTree, we headed into the park to spend the morning photographing my friend, Ryan Robinson, as he highlined 100 feet above the desert floor. I had the opportunity to walk the line as well, and Luke from our partner Adventure Aide gave it a try too. Awesome work man!

Next, we headed out to hike the Chasm of Doom, a short scramble that passes directly  beneath a ton of Joshua Tree's iconic gneiss rocks. Everyone who joined for this portion of the day made it through the Birth Canal—a crazy tight passage that requires you to literally slide on your belly to make it out! It's always important to push through comfort zones, literally and figuratively, and I'm stoked we were able to add this to the experience.

Then as the sun was setting it was back to one of my favorite spots in the park to take photos of one of my team members, Whitney, to practice using a human element to create scale in the landscape. A well deserved taco dinner awaited back at the Hipcamp before we dove into a classroom setting (complete with a roaring fireplace) to discuss photo management, editing, working with brands, and more. We were all smoked from the day but it wouldn't have been an authentic Travis Burke Experience without a little bit of discomfort.

My friend Ian from my partner, OPT, joined us for the grand finale. He brought a high powered telescope from OPT's headquarters and set it up in the middle of the Hipcamp, where we were able to find and view galaxies and get an intro to space. One of Ian's final images from the night is shared below.

Thank you to my partners: HippyTree, OPT, Goal Zero, Forsake, HydroFlask, and Soul Much for making this workshop such a success, and for everyone who came out. We can't wait to do it again!
